Porphyria refers to a group of rare disorders caused by problems with the production of heme, a component of hemoglobin. Several types of porphyria cause extreme sensitivity to sunlight. When porphyrins accumulate in the skin, sun exposure can trigger severe burning, blistering, and scarring. The cutaneous forms of porphyria — including PCT, EPP, and CEP — all involve significant photosensitivity.
